The Blackburnshire Vaccaries Project has been running for many years. There were four Royal Forests in Blackburnshire – Pendle, Trawden, Accrington and Rossendale. It is fascinating to see the medieval landscape slowly coming to life. We are currently field walking areas associated with the Rossendale vaccaries and deer parks of the 1200s to 1500s. Vaccaries were specialist farms for the production of oxen, the main beasts of burden and transport in medieval times.
