Wycoller Country Park Landscape Study – Recording Barns – 22nd March 2014

Bracken Hill, Wycoller (1)The weather forecast threatened heavy showers all day but 5 of us managed to sneak in a morning’s recording of the fascinating Bracken Hill Barn, which probably dates to the early 1600s. We returned to finish off some work from last year, mainly to get some final measurements and set-piece photographs with the 28mm shift lens on the film camera. As a reminder of the good/bad old days, the film wind-on kept snagging the film, so we will wait and see what comes out!

A couple of new things came to light. One was the superb ridge and furrow visible in the field behind the barn.

The padstone had been shaped at the top as if to to take a timber post for a timber framed building.  It probably relates to an earlier building on the site the present Georgian cottage, though it is possible that it was moved from elsewhwere as a good stone to underpin the corner of the cottage.

Many thanks to the owners for allowing us access.
